Between Koserow and Zempin, at the narrowest point of the island of Usedom—where the Baltic Sea broke through into the Achterwasser during two storm surges in 1872 and 1874— stands the studio in Lüttenort where the renowned painter Otto Niemeyer-Holstein lived and worked until his death in 1984. Today, the painter’s works are exhibited in the rooms, which have been preserved in their original state. Afterward, we’ll explore the small seaside resort of Zempin with its picturesque Achterwasser harbor and the beautiful wooded area east of Zinnowitz.
In front of the Koserow train station, we cross the B 111 and walk along Bahnhofstraße to Hauptstraße, where we turn left. After 500 m, at a small square, the Triftweg branches off to the left. It leads us out of town and back to the B 111 and the Bäderbahn railway line that runs alongside it. Once we’ve crossed both, we head through a small forest into the meadows along the Achterwasser. At a ditch, we turn right and hike along the edge of the forest to the Damerow Forest House. Here, we keep to the left and arrive at a cove of the Achterwasser. Continuing right along the dike, it’s just a few minutes’ walk to the Otto Niemeyer-Holstein Studio Museum in Lüttenort, which is set in a large garden beneath old trees. Behind the small museum, we walk along the dike—enjoying beautiful views across the Achterwasser—for half an hour to the small, picturesque fishing and angling harbor of Zempin, the smallest seaside resort on Usedom.
