To the Home of the White Horses
Since 1580, the white Lipizzaner horses have been bred in Lipica (Italian Lipizza), originally as a crossbreed of resilient Karst mares and Spanish stallions. Until 1918, Lipica was the breeding stud of the Habsburg monarchy; today the stud is owned by the Slovenian state. On a tour, you can see not only the noble horses but also the beautiful old stables. Our hike starts at the gate of Lipica and leads us through a typical Karst landscape whose meadows transform into a sea of blossoms in spring with bright blue irises and red peonies. The "highlight" is the summit of Kokoš with a small hut and a cozy picnic area, where the border with Italy runs. One more tip for gourmets: On the way to Kokoš, we pass through Lokev, famous for the best Karst ham, which owes its flavor to a long drying process in the cold bora wind.
From the Stone Gate in Lipica, we follow the path towards Vilenica into the forest; after about 10 minutes, there is an old mine shaft on the right. Shortly afterwards, we turn left onto a trail that leads through beautiful Karst landscape. We cross a path to Lipica and reach a gravel road, which we follow right to an asphalt road. From there, left and immediately right to the Vilenica Fairy Cave, 405 m. We pass the cave building, straight over the meadow, then right at a small stone wall, at the next fork again right, through an unattractive new housing development to the road and left on this to Lokev. Through a suburban settlement and past the ham factory, we reach the main road, cross it, and go right past the cemetery, 430 m, on a well-marked gravel road towards Kokoš. After about half an hour, our path narrows, climbs steeply to the ridge, and finally leads onto a wide path. On this, after a few minutes, we reach Kokoš with a large radio mast and the Koča na Kokoši hut, 670 m.
