We orient ourselves by the signs of the Arnoweg and ascend over lush meadows to the national border. The path follows the border line until it leaves the ridge and after the hamlet Mehlweg we reach the upright rock slabs of the Barmsteine. Over the exposed north ridge of the small Barmstein, we climb on the secured path to the summit and look out over the Salzach valley from Pass Lueg to Salzburg. Below us, in Hallein, rests Franz Xaver Gruber (1787-1863), the composer of the Christmas carol "Silent Night". His home and death house today houses the Silent Night Museum. For the return trip, we choose the slightly shorter route through forest and meadows down to Marktschellenberg.
