    Author’s recommendation

Knutshøe is little traveled, and its ridge shape and little disturbed nature are considerably more beautiful than the Besseggen ridge located on the other side of the Gjende lake. Due to a light climbing section (I) at the beginning of the ridge, Knutshøe offers a small challenge for pure hikers at the start, but this short section is unlikely to cause serious difficulties for anyone.

    Safety information

Basic climbing skills (I to II difficulty grade) and the ability to find a sensible route without a path are required. Caution: there is no side descent from the ridge, only at the western end!

    Roadbook

We start at the parking lot located about 5 km south of the junction to Gjendeheim on RV (Reichsweg) 51. From there, it goes westward, well marked on a clear path west to the sign warning of the difficulties of the route.

Shortly after, the ascent begins with a short climbing section (I - II). After that, a path is still initially recognizable. After some time it disappears on the increasingly rocky terrain. Hiking markers are painted over in gray. The path always follows the highest points of the ridge to the summit of Knutshøe.

Afterwards, the path descends further to the northwest. Always close to the highest points, we walk down. Again a light climbing section. At the end of the ridge, the path first turns slightly south and then below the ridge along the lake Øvre Leirungen to the east. It is advisable to follow the path that always lies highest at the foot of the ridge to avoid swampy terrain near the lake.

After a longer return, you again reach the first part of the outbound route, which you follow back to the parking lot.
