The Klafferkessel is regarded as a natural wonder from the Ice Age. The shortest access is from the Preintaler Hut. Those who hike it should do so in good visibility and follow a fundamental rule of mushroom hunters: walk slowly – look quickly. A walk through this maze of lakes and ponds, irregularly scattered, laid out on several levels, many of them long covered by ice, with varying colors and interesting reflections, located in rocky barrenness or green and flowery bordered, is always an experience. Their appearance has earned them the nickname "Mirror of God." The basin changes its face continuously from the beginning to the end of the hiking season. The 30 lakes or puddles are usually snow- and ice-free only in July.
Most beautifully, we ascend from the parking lot in the Untertal on a forest path to the right of the two-stage, impressive Riesachfall, then cross the stream on a footbridge and reach a fork: left hiking trail – right Alpine trail (variant). The former leads us to a forest road, which we follow to the Upper Gfölleralm. The alpine trail also converges there. We hike down the road towards the Riesachsee and along the long, flat valley floor past other alpine pastures to the Kotalm (hut material lift). Accompanied by small waterfalls, a well-trodden footpath (No. 777) leads us over a shady, rocky terrain step up to the Preintaler Hut. Immediately behind the Preintaler Hut (waymark "702 Klafferkessel") over a meadow slope to a ridge, right to the stream, which points to a valley narrowing that separates the Outer from the Inner Lämmerkar.
