Kingley Vale National Nature Reserve contains a grove of ancient yews, amongst the oldest living things in Britain, twisted and gnarled like a 'Tolkein' forest. None but the brave come here at dusk - legends of witches and ghosts abound! A favourite haunt of Tennyson, in life - and after death! From The Hare and Hounds pub we head north-west through a patchwork of fields, woods and tranquil valleys, with wonderful views as we drop down to Walderton. Passing The Barley Mow pub, we climb up to the open Downs to the magical Kingley Vale. After a steep climb through a yew forest we visit the Devil's Humps - Bronze Age barrows, before returning down the slopes of Stoughton Down. Rating 4. Time 3h 45m. Distance 15.6kms. Ascents 470m. Descents 470m. Route Circular. Refreshments 4.
