Sharp Contrasts Between Ifinger and Mittager

The name “Meran 2000” refers to a heavily developed mountain area that roughly stretches across the Piffinger and Kirchsteiger Alms —essentially where the western ridge of the Sarntal Alps, below the Ifinger, loses its ruggedness and takes on a gentler character as it slopes southward. Thanks to the ski lifts, the area is bustling even in summer, though the scars on the landscape are all too evident. In any case, the selection of places to stop for a bite to eat is more extensive here than almost anywhere else covered in this guide. Our loop takes us past the self-service restaurant at Kesselberg, the hut on the sweeping slope of the Mittager, offering a sort of contrast to the Neue Öttenbacher Alm, and then into the heart of the region at the Kirchsteiger Alm, where the Alpine Club’s Meraner Hütte is also located. You’re sure to be able to grab a tasty meal somewhere…

From the Meran 2000 mountain station at Piffinger Köpfl, we take the wide trail No. 3, which gradually winds its way up across the meadow slopes crisscrossed by ski lifts. Along the way, we pass the Naifjoch and the turnoff to the imposing Ifinger on our left and cross a massive crevice on the southern flank of the Plattinger before the view into the Sarntal opens up at the Missensteiner Joch, 2,128 m. A broad ridge now leads up to the Kesselberghütte, 2,300 m. Skiing extends this far in winter. A little further down, Trail No. 13 skirts the Kesselbergscharte and heads diagonally right toward the grassy ridge at the Mittager. After a left turn, we soon reach the Mittagerhütte, 2,260 m, with a chairlift station nearby. If you really want to experience the idyllic atmosphere on this hike, you shouldn’t head back down to the ski area just yet; instead, head southeast down to the Öttenbacher Alm, at about 1,920 m. From there, a pleasant trail along the mountainside takes us across the

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
