To the east of the Tannheim Mountains, following the deep, wide valley of the Lech, lie the Ammergau Alps. The most charming landscape and the most striking mountains are found there in the Kenzen region, with a good dozen peaks, some of which—compared to their height—are unusually rocky. For example, the 1,884-meter-high Geiselstein forms a beautifully shaped pyramid of the finest Upper Rätian limestone. This steep rock pyramid has therefore become the most famous climbing destination far and wide. Our route first leads to the Kenzenkopf, an ideal vantage point, and then curves around the Geiselstein.

The rest of the ascent westward follows a rocky trail through the so-called “Gasse”—a narrow, steep gully below beautiful rock faces—to the Kenzensattel at 1,650 m. From here, we take a detour to the Westeck. To do this, we take the trail to the right from the saddle and climb up between scattered spruce trees toward the rocks. Keeping to the left, the trail leads to a shoulder; we then cross a small plateau to the right and quickly reach the cross standing on the Westeck (1,730 m) of the Kenzenkopf. The actual summit (1,745 m) is another 15 m higher and can only be reached by a fairly exposed climb along the ridge (II; 10 min.).We descend again along the familiar trail to the Kenzensattel, follow the trail to the right, and walk gently downhill to the
