»Television« at the Outpost of the Tux Alps

A mountain with a hut near the summit, a fantastically contrasting 360-degree panorama, and a versatile network of trails all around has to be a magnet for visitors! The Kellerjoch combines all these advantages and can even be reached relatively quickly from Fügen with the help of the Spieljoch cable car. The cleverest, though not quite easy, access follows the so-called Alpinsteig beneath the rocky northern cliff; with the gentler route via the Gartalm, it makes an ideal circuit. Right at the top near the chapel, you don't know where to look first: across the wide Inn Valley towards the Rofan and Karwendel or southwards into the realms of the main Alpine ridge, which forms the horizon adorned with ice. A few brief lines cannot even begin to describe what can be admired on a clear day from the Kellerjoch...

After we have comfortably floated up from Fügen to the Spieljoch, 1862 m, we follow the path towards Gartalm/Kellerjoch to a terrain corner with a cross. We avoid the ski piste towards Onkeljoch and follow a trail that soon forks. Here, right upward to the ski lift stations at Onkeljoch, whose summit is bypassed on the left. We reach a saddle with another fork and then traverse on the Alpinsteig below the grim northern flank of the Kellerjoch massif. After a traverse, it goes upwards at the edge of the hollow to a ridge (at point 2143) and then, somewhat exposed, across some gullies to the next terrain ridge (hazardous near old snow patches!). Now you can ascend directly over grass and rocky outcrops from the northwest to the summit chapel at Kellerjoch (Kreuzjoch), 2344 m, while another path leads over to the Kellerjoch hut. From the highest point, we quickly reach the Kellerjoch hut, 2237 m, at or beside the southwest ridge (some safety devices). Nearby, turn eastwards into the wide

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
