Scenic Hike Along the Ridge Over the Weißenbach Valley and Mühlwalder Valley

The Mühlwalder Ridge (Tristenspitze, 2,716 m) not only features a famous summit with panoramic views (Speikboden, see Tours 11, 12), but also a high-altitude trail that follows the multi-peaked ridge first westward, then northward to the Nevesjoch, 2,405 m: a magnificent scenic route with not too many ups and downs, though it also includes a few somewhat tricky sections between Gornerjoch and Lappacher Jöchl. The most rewarding way to hike it is in combination with one of the adjacent high-altitude trails: the Neveser or the Stabeler.

After taking the lift from the Speikboden lift’s valley station, the ascent to the Speikboden ridge marks the start of the high-altitude hike. Red-and-white trail markers lead uphill from the lift station at the Michlreiser Alm (1,960 m) across the wide, groomed ski slope. Beneath the northern cliffs of the Speikboden, the trail traces a wide arc before—passing the idyllic Speikbodensee (2,280 m)—heading toward the summit’s long, stretched-out eastern ridge. At the signpost tree, 2,387 m, keep to the right and follow the high-altitude trail on level ground through the grassy southern slopes of the Speikboden to the overgrown foundation walls of the former Sonklarhütte, 2,408 m, and on to the Mühlwalder Joch, 2,342 m. Continue along the broad ridge or slightly below it to an unnamed saddle, 2,372 m, then on the south side of the increasingly rocky ridge into the Fadner Jöchl. Pass the Fadner (2,457 m; short detour) and head slightly downhill beneath the Gornerberg to the Gornerjoch (2,
