Holsteinische Schweiz
A cultural and historical highlight of the tour is Katzburg, a Slavic castle complex believed to date from the 9th or 10th century. From the preserved ring wall, a sweeping view of the Glasau lowlands unfolds. The nearly triangular complex has a diameter of about 100 meters, while the rampart rises up to eight meters. Since no building remains were found inside, the site is classified as a possible refuge fortress.
The town of Glasau is also located in an important habitat for the tree frog within the Holsteinische Schweiz Nature Park. This small, bright green frog is a skilled climber and uses its adhesive pads to perch on shrubs and trees to bask in the sun. During the breeding season between April and June, it can be found near sunny small bodies of water, where its calls can often be heard from far away during the night.
