The Katharinen Chapel is located in an elevated position on the third highest peak in the Kaiserstuhl. The house of worship was first documented in 1402. The current building is said to have been constructed on the occasion of Friedrich von Baden's visit in 1860 and was consecrated in 1862. The small church tower can be climbed, and it is worth it, because only from there can you enjoy a panoramic view of the surroundings. Otherwise, the Katharinenberg is surrounded by a dense deciduous forest. After the ascent from Bahlingen, tables and benches under the shade-giving trees invite you to rest at the summit before proceeding towards Oberrotweil.
Our short and varied excursion begins at the train station in Bahlingen with the route along Bahnhofstraße to Riegeler Straße (L116). Here, shortly left, then right into Bachstraße and now straight ahead for a while. Finally, the yellow rhombus on the Endinger Weg guides us out of the built-up area. The lightly trafficked asphalt road leads through a loess hollow way up to the vineyards, which is up to 15 meters deep, with beautiful distant views of the Rhine Valley towards the Black Forest behind us. Soon the ground changes to gravel, and the Habstalhütte marks a first rest spot with tables and benches.At the shelter, the path initially dips into the forest as a short steep trail, then the route follows a forest road to the right and after about 200 meters turns left again onto the next path passage.
