The approximately 5 km long walk through the city of Blieskastel follows the traces of Baroque of Countess Marianne von der Leyen from Paradeplatz via Gollenstein, the Blieskastel monastery and back to the beautiful old town of Blieskastel.
The city hike leads from the former Paradeplatz through the narrow alleys in the old town of Blieskastel steeply uphill (stairs with 207 steps) to the monastery complex with monastery park and the Holy Cross Chapel. In the chapel, the so-called Arrow Madonna was newly placed on the altar in March 1913, thus reviving an old pilgrimage tradition. In order to pastorally care for the steadily increasing crowd, Bishop Ludwig Sebastian of Speyer called Capuchins of the Bavarian Province to Blieskastel in the then 'Saargebiet' in 1924. Construction of the monastery complex began just one year later. Blieskastel is still an important pilgrimage site in the diocese of Speyer due to the Arrow Madonna 'Our Lady with the Arrows.' Today, the pilgrimage monastery is managed by the order of the Franciscan Minorites.
Other stations on the route are the seven-meter-high Gollenstein, the Schellental forest adventure park of the Blieskastel city forest, the Maximilian column in Tiergartenstraße, which originally stood in the city. The 6.20-meter-high and 12-ton column made of Buntsandstein was donated by the Blieskastel citizens to King Maximilian Joseph, 'the father of the fatherland,' in 1823 on the occasion of the construction of the important new Blieskastel-Biesingen-Sarreguemines road. From here, the route leads back to the old town.
Sturdy footwear is recommended for the approximately 5-kilometer city hike, as some unpaved paths are also walked.
