As early as 1876, the patron Karl Romwalter not only had the first hiking trails marked out in the Ödenburg City Forest, but also had a wooden observation tower built on Varis Mountain at his own expense. Today’s 21-meter-high stone tower on the hill named after him, Karlshöhe (Károly-magaslat in Hungarian), dates back to 1936 and is part of the “ecotourism visitor center,” which also includes a small museum and an interpretive trail in the forest.
From the bus stop in Kertváros, we walk back a few meters to Szalamandra út, where we’ll find a yellow marker right at the beginning of the street. We follow it up the street and, at the end, into the forest. A forest road joins from the right; we continue along it, passing the Salamander Pond (Szalamandra-tó). Here there are several rest areas, a shelter, and a covered spring (Természetbarát forrás) with drinking water. We now follow the yellow trail markers upstream. The trail turns left, becoming steeper and, in places, quite eroded as it winds up through a forested ravine to the Hétbükkfa rest area, where a blue trail marker joins ours. Keeping to the left, after 100 m we reach a junction where the blue trail marker leaves us; we continue straight ahead, still following the yellow trail, which is also marked with a green “T” and a flower symbol. This brings us to a paved road, where we turn left to reach the parking lot at the Trianon Memorial Park after 200 m. From here, we follow
