Alongside Stoderzinken and Grimming, the Kammspitze is one of the three rocky reefs that extend the main ridge of the Dachstein mountain range to the east and are impressive vantage points above the Enns Valley. The view extends from the Totes Gebirge and the Ennstal Alps over the long chain of the Niedere Tauern to the peak of the Hohe Tauern, the Grossglockner. Two paths lead from Gröbming to the summit, which can be combined from the starting point or further up to form a circular tour. We suggest the path to Säbelboden for the ascent and descent and start a circular tour over the Kammspitze from there.
From the parking lot on Hofmanningerweg, we continue along this path until Route 678 branches off to the left before the Aichmann estate, which leads up through the forest to Säbelboden as a well-signposted tractor path. There we first cross a forest road, keep left at the next junction and join Route 677 (variant) on Route 678a. On this route, we soon bypass the tongue of a scree field, climb first through mountain pines, then along the edge of a gully and again through mountain pines to a ledge at the base of a rock face. Now we cross a ditch to the left, then reach a shoulder from which we follow a ridge to another shoulder on the edge of the mountain pines. Via a grassy hollow, we reach the unnamed saddle between Kammspitze and Winterstein with a view into Karl - let's call it Wintersteinscharte -, then along the ridge and via a steep grassy flank to the start of the belays on the rocky summit structure.
