Jäkälälammen Nature Trail, Valkealampi, Alajärvi
Along the trail, visitors can explore a variety of forest habitats, wetlands, plant species and local wildlife. Geopark information boards provide insight into the region’s biodiversity, geological features and the formation of the surrounding landscape. The area forms part of the wider Geopark landscape, shaped by the unique geological history of one of Europe’s largest meteorite impact structures.
The trail encourages visitors to slow down and experience nature using all their senses. Interactive tasks along the route invite walkers to listen to forest sounds, observe small details in the environment, touch natural surfaces and connect with the calm atmosphere of the woodland.
The easy and accessible trail is suitable for families, school groups and anyone interested in nature-based experiences. It offers a peaceful outdoor walk and an opportunity to learn about local nature and geology in an authentic setting throughout the year.

From the start, the path leads between ski track corridors into dry heath forest. The route mainly follows narrow forest trails, with duckboard sections provided in wetter areas. The terrain is generally easy and has only minor elevation changes, making it suitable for relaxed nature walks.
The trail lies within a groundwater protection area, and sandy esker formations typical of the region can be observed along the way. The Geopark signage explains local biodiversity, geological features and the formation of the landscape. In addition, sensory tasks encourage visitors to pause and observe the surroundings from different perspectives.
Around the halfway point, a junction leads to Jäkälämäki lean-to shelter, approximately 400 metres away, offering a good rest stop before continuing.
The main trail continues around Jäkälälampi. Along the lakeshore, visitors may observe birdlife and other signs of nature. The route offers varied views of both forest and water landscapes.
Towards the end, the trail rejoins the initial section and returns to the starting point at Valkealampi ski stadium. Overall, the route provides a well-rounded introduction to the area’s nature, geology and landscapes in an easily accessible setting.
