For Julius Kugy, the great explorer of the Julian Alps, the Trenta was an important starting point for his tours to the peaks between Bavški Grintavec (Flitscher Grintouc) and Jalovec (Jalouc) in the west and Triglav in the east. Slightly north of the small church Sv. Marija, Albert Bois de Chesne, a friend of Kugy, established the Juliana Botanical Garden in 1927. It is home to around 600 plant species, mostly from the Julian Alps. The Kugy Monument (Kugyjev spomenik), erected by the Slovenian Alpine Association on the Vršič road, shows him looking towards Jalouc over the Zadnja Trenta (Rear Trenta). Kugy referred to the Isonzo as the "most beautiful river in Europe" because of its play of colors.
From the small parking lot on the Vršič road, it is only a few steps to the entrance of the Juliana Alpine Garden (Alpinum Juliana), which extends over an area of about 3000 m² on the sunny western slope of the Kukla – its visit is an experience not only for botanists! Then we walk a few minutes from the parking lot along the Vršič road down into the mouth of the Mlinarica Gorge. On a footbridge, we cross the young Soča, immediately turn up to the left diagonally and, passing the Turek farm, reach the Kugy Monument (Kugyjev spomenik), 810 m.On the nearby main road, we walk 300 m downhill and turn at curve no. 49 onto an asphalt road that leads to Koča pri izviru Soče, 886 m. From the hut, a marked, well-secured path in the upper area takes us to the Izvir Soče (Soča/Isonzo source), about 1030 m, a typical karst spring. At the end of a deeply cut gorge, through which the Soča roars with a small waterfall, we look into a collection basin filled with green shimmering, crystal-clear water.
