The Maggia, which gives the lower part of the valley its name, originates in the remote Val Sambuco, which is essentially the alpine continuation of the Val Lavizzara. Numerous small and larger glacier lakes feed the still young Maggia here, whose unhindered flow is initially slowed down by two large reservoirs, Lago del Narèt and Lago del Sambuco. Both lakes are located in a magnificent high mountain landscape. This high valley used to be the frequently used crossing into the Bedretto valley. This area is still highly recommended for its magnificent landscape and botanical special features.
We leave Fusio heading north over the Maggia bridge and then take a shortcut that starts at a chapel. At the highest point, 1457 m, we turn left down on the alpine road and soon meet the paved service road again, which we then follow to the dam of Lago del Sambuco and from there for three kilometers along the lakeshore. At the end of the lake we continue on the road through a magnificent larch forest – now above the Maggia climbing a valley step to the extensive Alp Campo la Torba. Our hike ends at Alpe Campo di Sotto, 1601 m, which is a little left of the road.We vary the return to Fusio by taking the old pack path "Strada alta di Sambuco" shortly before reaching the lake on the left, which runs 200 m above the lake and connects, among others, the Alpe Sassello and the Alpe Scheggia (new shortcut, which leads horizontally from the first hairpin bend to the old pack path). We reach the service road again after a short descent to the lake. Then past the dam on the ascent route back to
