The legend of Saint Idda forms the connecting thread of this circular hike in the wooded Hinterthurgau region, known as the Pinecone Land. In the mid-12th century, Count Heinrich lived with his wife Idda at the ancestral seat of Alt-Toggenburg. According to tradition, Idda was falsely accused of infidelity and thrown over the castle wall into the abyss by her hot-tempered husband. Thanks to a divine intervention, she was unharmed and lived thereafter as a hermit in the forest out of gratitude. Since then, Idda has been regarded as the patron saint of the area. She is buried in the church of Fischingen Monastery.
The circular route starts at Fischingen Monastery, a Benedictine abbey founded in 1133. At first, you have to share the road towards Mühlrüti for a stretch before the route branches off left towards St. Iddaburg. Passing scattered farms, the path climbs uphill. When the ridge narrows, St. Iddaburg is soon reached. At the top, on the site of the Alt-Toggenburg, completely destroyed in 1286, stands the pilgrimage church built in 1934. A wooden cross marks the crash site of Saint Idda. The view extends widely over the hilly landscape of Hinterthurgau. From the nearby Lourdes grotto, a romantic path runs along the conglomerate rock faces to the fork above Egg, where the trail descends to Bechten via pastures with a short ascent to the right. From here, it continues towards Fischingen, through a ravine and with a long ascent to Holenstein.
