The border forest is located on the Dutch border and is bounded by the so-called "gorge," the slope down to the Maas valley. Along the way, mostly sandy paths lead through predominantly pine forests and occasional moor areas.
We follow the signpost to the Sequoiafarm Kaldenkirchen at the Gasthaus Galgenvenn, which we reach after only a few meters. The arboretum – a kind of botanical garden – with its up to 40 m tall giant sequoias is one of the main attractions of the Naturpark Schwalm-Nette (see also note). It was founded in 1946 with the aim of researching whether the seedlings of the giant sequoia, which was native here before the Ice Age, could be reintroduced into German forestry. Over the years, the number of exotic tree species has steadily increased to about 600 today. We leave the fenced Sequoiafarm behind and follow the forest path further until we come to a fork. Here we take the left path marked (A1). From here until the White Stone, we are partly on the E8 trail, whose designation we will encounter occasionally. At a junction, we continue straight ahead towards Maalbeek (A2). Shortly afterwards, to our right, lies the Hühnerkamp, a heath-like clearing. Now we keep right at the next fork. Here
