The Sapal Nature Park is an extensive lagoon landscape between Castro Marim, Vila Real de Santo António, and Monte Gordo. Various wading birds (e.g., flamingos) can be observed here. The large salt hills west of Castro Marim are also impressive. Unfortunately, the circular walk includes some heavily trafficked roads.
From the parking lot in Castro Marim, we head towards the impressive fortress and follow Rua 25 de Abril clockwise around the fortress hill. It leads into Rua 26 de Janeiro, which becomes João da Guarda Cabreira street. Then we reach the heavily trafficked parallel road to N122/IC 27. Here we encounter the white-red markings of the Guadiana long-distance trail. We follow the road towards Vila Real de Santo António and gradually leave Castro Marim. We cross a tributary on a road bridge and look out over wide marshland. Our path runs on the right side of the road heading south; in places, one can use a parallel meadow path or bike path. After just over 1 km along this road, we approach a large river course again, the Esteiro da Carrasqueira. Before reaching it, we turn right onto a dike path into the lagoon. The wide dirt road runs through marshland. To the right of the path lies farmland (pastures and olive trees), to the left the wide lagoon landscape with a rich bird population:
