The Ilveskierros invites you to enjoy the beautiful nature of Kainuu and is an excellent destination for nature enthusiasts. The route includes many elevation changes and the terrain is in places rooty and rocky. For this reason, the trail is not suitable for very young children. The Ilveskierros, starting from Paljakka Center, goes through the Savipaikankoski landscapes to Latvavaara, from where magnificent fell views open up. The trail continues on the slopes of the fell in an almost untouched forest, where the peace of nature is tangible and you can feel its calming effect. Ilveskota is a great spot to stop and enjoy your snacks, and you might even spot a Siberian jay out of curiosity at the resting place watching hikers. After Ilveskota, views open up to the majestic spruce forests of the nature reserve. On a hot summer day, a visit to the Löytöjärvi day hut will tempt you to take a dip in the cooling waves.

Roadbook
The Ilveskierros route starts from the large parking area at the Paljakka Tourism Center, from where you proceed about 300 meters to the actual trail. When going clockwise, the beginning of the route includes an approximately 400-meter barrier-free section that is suitable for wheelchair users. At the end of this section, there is a campfire site with firewood. From here, you continue following the rapids landscape along Savipaikankoski until the trail forks in different directions.
Continue clockwise to the left until the trail briefly goes along a gravel road. After this, the trail enters the shade of magnificent spruce forests and follows the Louhenjoki River north towards the Pirunkirkko day hut. From Pirunkirkko day hut, there is an opportunity to detour and view the partially canyon-like rock formations of Pirunkirkko; the Pirunkirkko river canyon is located slightly off the Ilveskierros route (approx. 300 m), but it can be visited via a guided trail if desired.
The Ilveskierros continues a short distance north before turning southeast along the gravel road. The gravel road is followed for about 200 meters, after which the trail returns to the path. The route proceeds in a beautiful mixed forest along the northern slopes of Latvavaara for about one kilometer to Ilveskota. From Ilveskota, continue south towards Löytöjärvi.
It is possible to hike the Ilveskierros without visiting the Löytöjärvi day hut, but visiting there is highly recommended, especially in summer. Visiting the Löytöjärvi day hut adds about 800 meters to the route. From Löytöjärvi, the trail turns from south to west towards the summit of Latvavaara and passes a nature reserve, after which it descends along the eastern slope back to the Savipaikankoski area, the same spot where the route forks in different directions. From here, you can continue along the same trail back to the starting point, the large parking area at the Paljakka center.
