A walk through Ilbesheim, the surrounding vineyards, and beneath fruit trees
Following the Birnabch stream, the tour takes you through the beautiful wine-growing village of Ilbesheim, into the vineyards, and past orchards. Before heading back to the cozy village, you’ll pass the historic Napoleon Bench, which recalls a time when the Palatinate was still French.
UFFBASSE! – Campaign for considerate behavior in nature
- Be considerate on the trail —always act thoughtfully, kindly, and respectfully toward everyone you meet along the way. This is especially important on farm roads, where winemakers, farmers, and foresters work even on weekends.
- Picnics & Trash— Remember to bring a trash bag with you and take your trash home with you. Use only the designated rest areas for breaks and picnics.
- Keep Dogs on a Leash—Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will appreciate it.
We—your fellow visitors and nature—appreciate it!

Safety information
Use of Farm Roads— Our tours through the vineyards often take us along paths that we share with others. We therefore ask that you always be considerate and friendly toward others. Winemakers, farmers, and foresters use these farm roads through fields, forests, and vineyards for their daily work—even on weekends. Due to work activities and/or weather conditions, the trails may be more muddy at times. Special caution is also required when crossing the road in and around the Palatinate villages. Trail closures and detours must be strictly observed.
Dangerous Situations – Should an emergency arise, quick assistance is essential. And even though cell phones can transmit GPS signals, traditional emergency response points are often the fastest way to get help. These are located in areas that are easily accessible to emergency vehicles. Make a note of the locations marked with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return to one of these locations and provide the number on the sign when you call for help. This way, emergency responders will know where to find you.

Roadbook
You’ll start at the alla Hopp! complex or the elementary school in Ilbesheim and follow the brownish trail markers numbered 3, “Obstblütenweg.” The trail leads you through the village along the Birnbach. Cross the country road carefully and immerse yourselves in the sea of vines south of Ilbesheim. As you make your way through the vineyards, the view opens up again and again to the Kleine Kalmit and the Haardtrand, where you can see Madenburg Castle and the Slevogthof.
You’ll pass blooming meadows, and beyond the vines you’ll see espaliered fruit trees—which give the tour its name. Just before the tour leads you back into Ilbesheim, you’ll pass the historic Napoleon Bench from 1811. There are still a few “Napoleon benches” in our region, serving as a reminder of the time when the Palatinate was still under French rule. The benches were placed along the paths leading to the market so that people could briefly set down their filled baskets and rest.
Following the Birnbach stream, the route takes you back along the same path to the starting point at the elementary school.
