: An Easily Accessible 3,000-Meter Peak A 3,000-meter peak with a challenging yet short ascent—this motivates even children to climb the summit with the fun name (Compass = circle, compass). However, they’ll need parents with mountain experience who can belay younger children if necessary. But the joy is immense when they’re greeted at the summit by a impressive number of cairns. The view is also impressive—not only the vista of the rugged peaks surrounding Piz Ela and the ice giants of the Bernina Alps, but also the view of the pass road below us and the nearby lakes.
The trail begins right next to the hospice on the Albula Pass. It climbs steeply and is quite strenuous (on the sunny side!) to a terrace, then steeply again to a saddle, the Fuorcla Zavretta (2,890 m), between Igl Compass and the impressive Piz Üertsch. From there, it’s not far to the summit of Igl Compass, which you reach through scree and over boulders. The magnificent panoramic view is reflected (certainly unintentionally) in the mountain’s name: “Compass” = circle. The descent follows the same route as the ascent.
