Ypres was an important city in the late Middle Ages, profiting well from the cloth trade with the Hanseatic League. The place became known during World War I due to several battles in the surrounding area. The Germans destroyed valuable architectural monuments such as the medieval Cloth Hall and used chemical warfare agents for the first time, marking a memorable novelty in military history: first chlorine gas and later mustard gas. The circular walk explores the old town, largely rebuilt after the destruction, with medieval city fortifications that were reinforced in the 17th century under Vauban, the French fortress architect under Louis XIV, with detached moats and defenses.
The Ieper train station lies on the western edge of the old city wall, which we approach towards the center. 50 m after the traffic light, we turn right and walk along the footpath into the rampart. At junctions, keep right and stay as far outside on the city wall as possible. At a bridge over the fortress moat Kasteelgracht, go straight towards Rijselpoort and keep right at junctions. At the southernmost point of the fortress, we pass the Rijselpoort, built in the 14th century and reinforced by Vauban, with a World War I military cemetery in front, as British soldiers were stationed on the fortress rampart.After the gate, we continue along the rampart, keeping as far right as before. At Menenpoort on the east side of the wall, cross the street. The recently renovated gate served as a starting point for British soldiers to the front at the Ypres Salient during World War I.
