Through the Danube Gorges

The steep slopes of the Danube between Passau and Jochenstein have been a protected nature reserve on the northern, German side since 1986 and have also been part of the Europe-wide Natura 2000 network since 2003. Seven different reptile species are found in this area, including the colorful green lizard and the Aesculapian snake, which, at up to two meters in length, is one of Europe’s largest snakes. The landscape is characterized by a unique mix of natural environments: south-facing slopes are warm and dry, almost Mediterranean, while the north-facing slopes remain cooler and more humid. This juxtaposition of different habitats ensures a high level of biodiversity. Especially in the spring, when the vegetation comes to life and the waters of the Danube glisten in the sun, the area shows itself at its most beautiful, and hikers can not only experience nature up close on the narrow trails through the Donauleiten but also enjoy spectacular views.

In Erlau, we start from the parking lot at the volunteer fire department on Haarer Straße (PA24) and head steeply uphill toward Nottau. At the first hairpin curve, the approximately 5 km-long, signposted Jägersteig (Trail No. 33) begins: We leave the road and follow the narrow path through the densely forested and steeply sloping Donauleiten Nature Reserve toward Obernzell. Especially at the beginning, there are several meters of elevation gain to tackle amid the constant ups and downs.Several lookout points are located along the Jägersteig. First, we reach a rest area with a shelter at an elevation of about 400 m. A beautiful view opens up before us, stretching from the Austrian village of Pyrawang all the way to Obernzell. The trail then climbs steadily until, at an elevation of about 500 m, the familiar up-and-down terrain begins again. After about 2.6 km, the Blutwurzpfad joins the Jägersteig. Our trail leads steeply down to the Hubertushöhe. The former lookout point is now heavily
