East of the Werra, the Plesse rises as a massive, steep flank, almost like a support for the Eichsfeld. The bright Muschelkalk (muschelkalk limestone) gleams like a shield from the dark hillside forests and almost invites a climb. The charming half-timbered town of Wanfried, with its numerous attractions such as the Keudell's Castle or the former transshipment harbor Schlagd, would be an excellent starting point. However, the new bypass road almost cuts Wanfried off from its local mountain. Therefore, it is best to start the tour beyond the B 249.
In front of the magnificent Plesse backdrop, you walk from the grill area marked with P5 towards the southeast. Through an alvar-like landscape, the path gently descends into the valley. Then, on a forest road, you reach the so-called Elfengrund with the Gatterbach waterfall. Next, go sharply uphill to the left and ascend steeply, with a short detour along the patrol path at the former German-German border to the Plesse tower. From the top, there is a wonderful view of the Werra valley and the pleasantly rounded Hülfensberg. Opposite the tower, a path leads back to the former patrol path. From there, you continue over heavily undulating terrain to the Thuringian village of Döringsdorf. Here, you turn left towards the inn and climb past the Bonifatius spring to the Hülfensberg. This distinctive mountain peak was already a place of worship in ancient times. Christian pilgrimages have been documented since around 1250.
