Hornberg - Windeck Cliffs - Castle Cliffs
The Gutach Valley, which runs almost exactly north-south, appears as a deeply incised V-shaped valley below the Triberg Waterfalls. While the Black Forest Railway winds its way uphill along the valley floor and through tunnels, the higher elevations are crowned by a wealth of rocky pinnacles, which we’ll be visiting one after another today. Furthermore, the hike stands out for its high proportion of trails and nature trails, so in addition to being in good physical condition, you’ll need to be sure-footed. Those who prefer to take it easy can split the tour into two separate loop hikes and start the southern half from the hiking parking lot at Althornberg.
At the train station in Hornberg(384 m), the Lahr Cross-Country Trail – Rottweil trail heads south on Bahnhofstraße, crosses the tracks, climbs up Franz-Schiele-Straße and Im Buchenbronn, winds its way up through gardens toward the forest, and—after a right turn at the junction of the same name—reaches the hiking parking lot at Gesundbrunnen, 490 m. This alternative parking lot, which features a shelter and a barbecue area, can be reached from Hornberg via an unpaved road. At the signpost, we keep to the left (shortly after, our return route joins from the right) and follow the yellow diamond markings uphill along a forest road to the “Beim Fernsehumsetzer” junction , from where the scenic rock trail on the right winds its way in several switchbacks up the Windeckfelsen, 704 m. After the final ascent—secured by handrails—to the small platform, a fantastic view down into the Gutachtal valley opens up, and a shelter offers protection from the weather.Continuing along a great hiking trail,
