Detour to Hopfen Castle Ruins

The shallow Hopfensee was formed during the Würm ice age by the advancing Lechtal glacier. While the northern shore is inhabited and heavily used for tourism, the more idyllic southern shore is almost entirely bordered by reed beds and then transitions into a moor – a refuge for many water birds. The approximately 7-kilometer circular trail is frequently used for hiking and cycling. We can also nicely include the high medieval Hopfen castle ruins located above in the tour.

We start at the western edge of Hopfen am See with an ascent via a forest road to the ruins of Hopfen Castle, 898 m. Up there is a small circular trail that also passes the most beautiful viewpoint (lake panorama). Afterwards, as signposted, we descend towards the center of Hopfen, about 790 m, and there take the circular lake trail clockwise (those who skip the ruins are already on the lakeside promenade). Behind the camping area, we gradually leave the tourist area and walk keeping right to the bridge over the Ach, 785 m. Partly wooded, it goes along the southeast shore and then near a parking lot gives an option for a detour to the Wiesbauer. The inn lies slightly elevated beyond the railway tracks. The continuation follows Hopfensee on its west side, initially a bit away in the reed area, later closer to the shore again. The route then winds back towards Hopfen am See to complete the circle.

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
