Hoher Stein, 710 m, and Rote Wand, 592 m
Opposite Spitz, on the southern side of the Danube valley, the proud cliff of the Hoher Stein rises up against the sky. And it is also the only place in the Wachau from which you can see the impressive rock. Only insiders know about the qualities of this "fortress" to the east of the Mühlberg and are familiar with the somewhat complicated and not entirely easy access to it. The wonderful viewing platform of the Rote Wand is much more tame, which is why it is recommended for those who want to enjoy a particularly beautiful view of the Danube valley and the Ötscher in the distance to the south without any danger or effort.
From Spitz to the "traversing road" and on it briefly to the left (northeast) up to a clearing with a flat forest road. Follow the unmarked road (WW) on the wooded slopes of the Mühlberg to the left into a shallow hollow. There turn right and follow the yellow marked path up the hollow steeply to the northeast, later next to the towered south ridge of the Hoher Stein northwards up into a gully at the east wall foot of the 40 m high rock. In the left section of the wall, over a 3 m high step (iron pins) onto a ledge, then over a 7 m high vertical ascent (two metal ladders) to the south shoulder. Now through a steep, flat run (wire rope) up to the airy summit of the Hoher Stein, 710 m. Return to the point where you reached the "crossing road" on the ascent. Continue straight ahead on it without markings, northwestwards, on the slopes of the Hochreut in the forest to a mountain edge with rock formations.
