Hoher Sonnblick, 3106 m
The Hoher Sonnblick is one of the best-known peaks of the Goldberg Group and is visited frequently almost all year round. Since 1886, Europe’s highest observatory has been located at the summit, which also commemorates Ignaz Rojacher from Rauris (1844–1891), the pioneer of the weather station on the Hoher Sonnblick. From the Alten Pocher, the Kleine Fleißtal rises steeply. The path passes through several vegetation zones and reaches high alpine terrain at the Kleines Fleißkees. A tour to the Hoher Sonnblick can also be combined with an ascent of the Goldbergspitze.
To reach the Hoher Sonnblick from Alten Pocher, we initially take either the 13 switchbacks of the service road or shorten the route via the Hans-Tritschl path, which climbs on the orographically right side of the Kleiner Fleißbach. The latter runs initially along the mountainside alternating between grassy slopes and larch forest. At an overhanging rock wall, the terrain becomes steeper and remains heavily strewn with blocks. We cross laterally flowing streams and brooklets, sometimes encountering short stone steps. Where a marked arrow points left, we pass some rockfall debris before the Sonnblickbankl, partially covered by a rock, offers a resting place. We reach a gently sloping shoulder sparsely covered with young larches. There, the trail veers left and passes underneath a power line. Shortly afterward, we come to the service road at 2232 m (bench). We follow it upward on five switchbacks (trail signs, junction to Zirmsee, 20 min). We stay on the path, which heads east towards
