Hoher Sonnblick, 3105 m
Strictly speaking, the Sonnblick is not a Carinthian peak, as the state border runs a few meters west of the highest point. However, the beautiful ascent through the Kleine Fleißtal is clearly a Carinthian tour, even a relatively difficult one, as the path leads over a glacier. The Kleine Fleißkees is considered to have few crevasses and is covered by a thick firn layer in early summer, which greatly simplifies the ascent. However, over the course of summer, the glacier increasingly melts out, becomes icy, and shows us a variety of smaller and larger crevasses that we can usually avoid well with skillful route finding. The highlight of Sonnblick is the Zittelhaus at the summit, an attractive overnight accommodation for romantics who want to enjoy a glowing sunset or sunrise. It is affiliated with the observatory built in 1886, now jointly maintained and operated by the Sonnblickverein and the ZAMG, a year-round staffed, unique weather and research station worldwide! Information, including about the 125-year eventful history, can be found at sonnblick.net.
From the Fleißtal parking lot, we follow the road to the Goldgräberdorf (signpost), which evokes memories of the old times of gold mining. There we turn left and pass the Goldgräberdorf and immediately afterwards the Gasthaus Alter Pocher, 1807 m.The path now winds beautifully along the Kleine Fleißbach through a rocky steep section uphill to about 2140 m, then we hike a flat traverse to the left until we reach the Kelag works road. We follow the road briefly to the left until we can turn right back onto the hiking trail. At about 2330 m, we reach the road again, ignore the turnoff to Zirmsee, and follow the signpost to Sonnblick to the right. After half an hour on the road, we can finally leave it again and turn left onto the trail at 2490 m, which leads straight up to the Fleißkees over a moraine ridge. We stay fairly close to the left edge of the initially flat glacier here, as there are the fewest crevasses. The glacier gradually steepens, the trail from the Zirmsee leads in from
