Tips and suggestions
Requirements: The two ascents to the Schiener Berg are challenging but pleasant to walk. Mostly forest and field paths, only on the „Firstweg“ and in the Klingenbach Gorge are there narrow hiking trails.
Points of Interest: Pilgrimage church St. Genesius, Klingenbach Gorge, Stiftskirche Öhningen
Train & Bus: The Höri bus runs hourly between the Radolfzell and Stein am Rhein (CH) train stations, stopping in all Höri towns. There is also a bus connection between Radolfzell, Schienen, and Öhningen. A return trip by scheduled boat from Öhningen-Oberstaad to Iznang (and further to Radolfzell) is possible with a transfer on the island of Reichenau.
Roadbook
„Now I'm stopping!“ is said to have been exclaimed by God in broad Lake Alemannic during the creation of the world when he finished the peninsula in the lower lake. Who can blame him? The mix of small villages, lake shores, fields, orchards, and forested hills and mountains is just too harmoniously done. In the 19th and 20th centuries, notable artists also discovered Höri: Hermann Hesse lived in Gaienhofen, Max Ackermann in Hornstaad, Walter Kaesbach, Erich Heckel, and Otto Dix in Hemmenhofen. The entire beauty and diversity of the landscape is especially shown during a crossing across the gently lake-dividing ridge of the Schiener Berg. Starting points suitable are Moos or – depending on taste and fitness – the neighboring Iznang reachable via the lakeside path. Here you turn into the „inland“ and hike via hamlets and Bettnang towards the Schiener Berg. The ascent on wide forest paths and through surprisingly deep hollow ways up to Langenmoos is pleasant. Once at the top, one could shorten the way by going straight ahead or, far more exciting and culturally valuable, take the detour to Schienen. This way, one hikes along the narrow Firstweg at the steeply breaking edge of the slope until a signpost points into the „mountain village“ nestled in a valley hollow. There stands the pilgrimage church St. Genesius, a very special jewel whose history can be traced back to the year 800. Before returning to the lake, there is another climb to Ferdinandslust, the highest reachable point of the Schiener Berg, on the agenda. More and more, the fjord-like narrow Untersee comes into view – at the latest during the wonderful meadow stroll at Kattenhorner Bühl. This tour tip offers another highlight: a walk through the Klingenbach Gorge. As you step out of the shadow of the romantically wild ravine, you almost stand at the gate of the magnificent Stiftskirche St. Hippolyt and Verena in Öhningen.
