Everyone who has ever driven from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen knows the Höhenberg. The motorists from the traffic jam at the immediately adjacent motorway end, the train passengers, as this is where the Loisach valley first narrows considerably. One might think the Höhenberg is a traffic obstacle? Far from it, because this gentle ridge in the middle of the Loisach valley provides important drinking water sources for the Bavarian state capital Munich and - much more important for leisure! - quiet paths and unusual views.
From Oberau, paths and trails initially lead up to the Heldenkreuz. The panorama there with views over the Loisach valley to the Wetterstein ridge is essentially repeated at the slightly higher Loisach viewpoint. From there, it is on to the Little Paradise, from where the first, easternmost peaks of the Ammer Mountains can be studied. The path again enters the mostly dense forest, which also covers the highest point of the Höhenberg. The descent leads down to Eschenlohe in the Loisach valley, where another beautiful viewpoint is reached. From there, the western peaks of the Walchensee mountains offer yet another very different panorama to enjoy.

Safety information
The paths and trails are generally in good condition. However, surefootedness is recommended around the "Little Paradise." In wet conditions or with snow cover, it can even be somewhat dangerous in the steep terrain, so a dry day should be chosen!Roadbook
Leave Oberau station towards the station building and cross the rather unattractive station square to the federal road. Now cross this either via the underpass or the pedestrian traffic light. On the other side, follow Schmiedweg into the town. At the village fountain, turn right onto the main street but leave it after a few meters to the left into Mühlstraße. Follow the street and continue straight at the edge of the development. The street name changes to "Am Mühlberg," but the direction initially stays the same. Only at the foot of the hill does the street turn slightly right and lead steeply up to a last farm. Beyond it, a small ford is reached; the associated stream can be easily crossed on a footbridge. On the other side of the brook, a bend in a driveway indicates the further route. For this, go left, i.e., uphill. After a crest, the driveway briefly loses some altitude but soon rises again. In this ascent, just before the distinctive already visible left-hand curve, leave the driveway: on the right, only a few meters away, runs a parallel path that leads further ascent to the Heldenkreuz.
From the Heldenkreuz, continue marked and signposted on the path upwards. This path still follows the ridge and only leaves it after touching a farm track. Now, somewhat to the right, it even goes slightly downhill again to the Loisach viewpoint.
Behind the covered bench, it essentially continues slightly left again back toward the ridge. Here the path is already a bit narrower and may not always be easy to recognize after the leaves fall in autumn. Reliable blue markings ensure that the correct way is not lost. Back on the ridge, orientation becomes easier again. To the left are surprisingly steep drops, which can be looked at very closely at the "Little Paradise." Some caution is advised: there is no railing!
Continuing in the same walking direction, the path shortly reaches the highest point of the Höhenberg. This is forested and unfortunately offers no view. On the other side, a wider path is soon reached, which passes by a beautiful, scenic meadow and leads downhill in switchbacks. It soon becomes a crosswise driveway that leads right along the way toward Eschenlohe. All smaller paths and branches must be ignored until the driveway finally reaches the valley floor parallel to the motorway running on an embankment, which can at least be heard. Shortly after, the intersection with a crosswise road is reached. Turn right here and go under the motorway via an underpass. On the other side, first keep straight and only turn left into Michael-Fischer-Straße at the church of the small village. Go straight past the church and follow Bahnhofstraße to the already near Eschenlohe station.

The free (as of 9/2023) hiking car park Oberau is not particularly conveniently located according to the route suggestion, but it is a comfortable parking option:
For this, in the unmistakable town center of Oberau at the level of the station, easily recognized by a large intersection with a pedestrian traffic light, turn off the through road at the station level into Werdenfelser Straße. At the intersection next to the railway crossing, turn left, cross the tracks, and then follow Flößerstraße on the right side. After a left curve, cross the Loisach and shortly afterwards at the next opportunity turn left. The hiking car park is located about 50 meters on the left side.
