Hochkönig summit route - Matrashaus. The shortest way from Arthurhaus
Scenic summit hike to the highest mountain in Salzburg: the Hochkönig (2939m) with the Matrashaus. The 360-degree panoramic view from the summit is breathtaking!
One thing right away: This summit route with nearly 1,700 meters of elevation gain is only suitable for trained and experienced hikers or mountaineers!
You start at Arthurhaus in Mühlbach. To Mitterfeldalm, it is still easy along the forest road. Then you walk a bit past alpine meadows before the real ascent starts. The path leads up between the rocks to the Matrashaus. From the last third, there can be some snowfields. If it is not icy, crossing these snowfields is not difficult. The last meters are climbed via ladders. Then you are finally rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree panoramic view.
Please do not underestimate the descent. Since the path is very rocky, you must always be concentrated and walk carefully.
If you do the ascent and descent in one day, you must start very early. We recommend 4 / 5 a.m. For hotel guests at Aktivhotel Alpendorf we gladly prepare a mountaineer's breakfast.

TIP: Take two days and stay overnight in the Matrashaus (directly on the summit). The sunset and sunrise are breathtaking!

Roadbook
The start of the summit route is at Arthurhaus. From there, go right towards Mitterfeldalm. Pass by Mitterfeldalm and take the path left towards Hochkönig. From there, only a marked path leads to the Matrashaus / Hochkönig. The path marking with dots on many rocks and stones is very good. Further up, trail sticks also help with orientation. Especially helpful in snow. The last section goes over 3 ladders. You must not be afraid of heights on this path and must be sure-footed. We wish you lots of fun! TEAM Alpendorf
