In summer, the Hirzer is the destination for many mountain hikers. A magnificent view is the reward for the strenuous ascent. With its distinctive summit, the Hirzer can be seen from afar and is the symbol of Passeier. The Hirzer hut is located with a view on an alpine plateau and is a stop on the European long-distance path E5.
From Saltaus, 490 m, we take the Hirzer cable car up to Klammeben, 1980 m. From the mountain station the path initially goes briefly downhill and through a rocky ravine with uphill counterstretch to the wide alpine meadow with the Hirzer hut, 1983 m, the Resegger Alm and the Tallner Alm. At the latter begins the strenuous, steep part of the tour. On well marked path 5 (which is a section of the European long-distance path no. 5) we hike steadily uphill eastwards, first over the meadow slope (approx. 20 min), then through the wide cirque in many hairpin bends. The rock barrier is overcome with steps and a gully. The scenic ridge height is reached at the Upper Notch, 2678 m. On the broad ridge, keep left and go briefly downhill with the E5 to a fork. There turn left and on a good trail below the ridge to the north. Through the southeast flank of our summit destination we reach the large summit cross on the Hirzer, 2781 m.
