From Schmalzgrube, named after an old iron smelter, the ridge trail leads to the high plateau of the Hirtstein, the highest mountain of the Central Ore Mountains, where a beautiful view awaits. Worth seeing is the basalt rock, also called Palmwedel, which was formed from solidified lava creating a 15 m high fan shape. The return route goes through beautiful forest, partly through the wood-rush beech forests of the Steinbach nature reserve, then high above the Preßnitz valley back to Schmalzgrube.
From the station of the Preßnitztalbahn in Schmalzgrube, head up the main street southwards. At the police station, turn left onto the ridge trail, now it gets steep. At a junction, continue straight on the forest path. At two further junctions, keep direction; further up at a junction, bear diagonally right, then again diagonally right. Always follow the ridge trail. At a wide gravel path, continue left. At a junction with a turning loop, turn left again, leaving the ridge trail. Those preferring an easier path over the scenic one can stay on the ridge trail the whole time. Others go briefly down a paved road to the stream and then turn diagonally right onto an unpaved and unmarked path. Always stay straight ahead on the main path, even at a wider section. The path becomes a hollow way with possibly uneven ground. At the shelter Lustiger Hans, where both variants meet, turn left onto the meadow path (ridge trail).
