Hiking circuit: Floating loop

Your route begins at the tourist office, but this building was formerly called the Engineers' House and the Guard's House as it housed the Masters of Works for the construction and the person responsible for monitoring the slightest movement of the dam. So take a look at the latter: 271 m long and 20 m high. It was built to regulate the Cure, a tributary of the Yonne, which itself is a tributary of the Seine, to control the flooding in Paris and to allow the floating of Morvan wood that warmed the fireplaces of the capital for nearly 300 years. Arriving near Gouloux, you will have the choice to continue your path or make a detour to visit the Marchand Saboterie and the mythical Morvan waterfall: the Gouloux leap. In the second part of your circuit, you will pass through the hamlets of Nataloup, Palmaroux, and Champgazon, which were floating ports where wood was stacked before being thrown into the water. Your return route runs through the Cure valley, a Natura 2000 classified area for its marshy and peat-like meadows.
