From the Werra, the path leads up into the Meininger Forest and soon offers magnificent views of the town. On beautiful trails, you walk sometimes through beech forest, sometimes through pine woodland to further viewpoints, a castle ruin, and the Melkers rock, which offers a wide view of the mountains of the Vorderen Rhön.
From the parking lot in Meiningen we follow the gravel path upstream along the Werra. At the bridge to Elisabethenburg Castle we turn right and continue to follow the marking of the "Extratour Meininger" (red "M", signs "Schaubachhütte 2.3 km") for the time being. At both forks, we keep left, gain altitude via switchbacks and cross an asphalt path. Then the red "M" leads us to the Diezhäuschen, a viewing platform with a great view of Meiningen. From here it goes towards "Schaubachhütte 1.9 km". At the intersection, we keep right and follow the path straight ahead until we come across a picnic bench where we go down to the right on a gravel path, shortly afterwards taking the path to the right. From Schaubachhütte, we enjoy beautiful views of the town and the Werra valley once again. With the hut at our back, we leave the "Extratour" marking and follow the path uphill to the right (marking: green drop).
