The striking Heldrastein drops steeply to the north towards the Werra Valley with vertical shell limestone rock cliffs. From the top edge, there are wide views to the north, which are even surpassed when you climb the 30 m high Tower of Unity (a converted Stasi listening post!) and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view.
From the car park at the church, it's just a few meters down to the Werra bridge, which we cross. 100 m behind the bridge, we turn right towards Heldra and head straight to the village (ignore "P6" here). We walk straight over the intersection in the pretty village center (ignoring the signage to Heldrastein) and at the edge of the village choose a field path to the right (continuing with "P6" here). It leads us with a left curve to the Blue Bridge, over which we cross the Werra to continue our tour half-right behind it.At the forest edge, the path turns left. At the next fork, we choose the patrol road half-right uphill. A few meters past the subsequent hairpin bend, we leave it again, choose the path leading uphill to the left and climb briskly in the forest. Sabine Gilcher
