The Eggstätt-Hemhofer Seenplatte is, alongside the Osterseen group and the Seeoner Seen, one of the most significant ice-melt landscapes in the Bavarian Alpine Foreland. Part of this landscape forms Bavaria's oldest nature reserve.
The five largest lakes (from south to north Langbürgner See, Schloßsee, Kautsee, Hartsee, and Pelhamer See) as well as some smaller lakes are connected to each other by watercourses with a slight northern slope. These are groundwater-fed dead ice holes without notable surface inflow. The Hartsee, at 39.1 m the deepest lake, drains via the Ischler Achen to the Eschenauer See and further on to the Alz.
