Along the path below the woodland, we encounter a variety of stinking hellebores (Helleborus foetidus). Their name comes from the unpleasant scent of their leaves. The stinking hellebore mainly occurs in herb-rich oak and beech forests and at forest edges. It prefers stony, slightly calcareous, loose and humus-rich loam or loess soils. The plant is very poisonous due to the compound helleborin.
The Rappenplatz is an important prehistoric and early historic archaeological site on the east slope of the Achalm. The 20 m wide and about 120 m long leveled area lies about 80 meters below the summit. Excavations have taken place here in recent years. The goal is to determine the type and duration of settlement on the Achalm in pre-Roman times.
The Rappenplatz was used as a settlement site in pre-Christian times. During the late Urnfield period (10th/9th century BC) as well as in Celtic times (Late Hallstatt and Early La Tène period, 6th–4th century BC), people settled here permanently. The settlement in early Celtic times is probably connected with the “Scheibengipfel.”
The natural leveled area of the "Rappenplatz" was expanded by artificial embankments into a massive settlement terrace. This made it possible to build houses on a level ground. Remains of the buildings are still preserved in the ground today (small finds provide insights into daily life and crafts in the 1st millennium BC).
The excavations reveal intensive settlement activity on the reshaped hillside terrace between the 4th and 6th centuries BC. A roughly 3 meter wide limestone wall has been proven, which bordered the settlement area. It is therefore described as having fortress character, underlining the special function of the Achalm settlement within the Celtic settlement network.
In addition, human skeletal remains were found in settlement deposits from the 4th/5th century BC. These are probably remains of special funeral ritual practices.

Staying at about the same height, this grassy path now takes us around the Achalm. We now have a view of Eningen unter Achalm.
After some time, we descend through a hollow to a gravel footpath, which we follow to the left. We climb several steps steeply up the hill and reach dry grassland areas. To the right is a nature reserve. At the top of the steps, a narrow trampling path (we choose the left path) continues zigzagging upwards. There, we get a great panoramic view of the Albtrauf.
Below a woodland stand, we continue walking to the right, always counterclockwise. Not far from our path lies the Rappenplatz, an important prehistoric and early historic archaeological site on the east slope of the Achalm. We cross extensive dry grasslands to the other side of the Achalm. After some time, there is another short uphill section before we finally reach a bench inviting us to rest. There is a beautiful view far into the foreland of the Swabian Jura. From here, the path initially stays at the same height through a thicket. Then it only goes downhill to the starting point, always keeping the city of Reutlingen in view.
