About the rugged Gottesacker

The name alone expresses the reverence of the people who lived on the karstified high plateau north of the Ifenstock, where nature probably always scarcely allowed life to thrive. The Gottesackeralpe was abandoned in the 1930s and has long since decayed. Dominating the landscape are sharp-edged karst fields marked by grooves, fissures, and sinkholes, which belong to the geological formation of the Helveticum: once deposited seabed, uplifted during the Alpine orogeny and later eroded by the tooth of time, especially through chemical dissolution weathering, also called karstification. Nevertheless, green basins with grass cushions and the color spots of a rare flora can be seen, elsewhere zones overgrown with dwarf pines where wildlife finds shelter. In the southern part of the Gottesacker rises the Hahnenköpfle, actually just an inconspicuous knoll in front of the vertical Ifen wall, but a fantastic viewing platform between the Allgäu and Bregenzerwald. Approaching through the Kürental (where archaeologists discovered a Stone Age campsite) or following Tour 3, we get to know the character of this exceptional landscape for the Kleinwalsertal intensively. At the Hahnenköpfle itself and during the descent through the Ifenmulde, the experience becomes much more lively.

At the Haus Sonnblick in Wäldele, we begin the access to the Gottesacker, starting on a wide track that after 10 minutes changes into a forest path. Towards Schneiderkürenalpe, 1545 m, it becomes quite rough, even more so on the continuation, which leads through the shallow cut of the Kürental (sometimes called Gottesackerloch in the upper area) up to the central plateau. Although heavily overgrown, the karstic underground already shows typical features and is not always easy to walk on, especially on wet, muddy rocks. The ascent to the site of the ruined Gottesackeralpe, 1835 m, is rather lengthy. At the important junction on the high plateau, we turn left towards the south and cross the hills "am hohen Döllen" (local name on the AV map) - mostly over typical Schrattenkalk limestone. For a while, dwarf pine islands still line the path before the ground towards Hahnenköpfle becomes almost completely bare. We watch for the indistinct fork, keep right there (i.e. not towards the cable

Profile picture of Mark Zahel Author Mark Zahel
