The "Strada Borromea," so called since the Archbishop of Milan, Carlo Borromeo, visited Valle Cannobina in the 16th century, connects the old villages that lie high above the valley on the mountainsides. The houses are cleverly placed to catch every ray of sunshine, and the road is also thoughtfully designed to remain largely passable during winter.
Opposite the church portal in Gurro, we begin our hike on Via Falmenta (ignore the stairway to the right). The white-red marked path with the marking "SI, S01" leads later also over steps to the saddle Passo Mergugna. Passing a fountain and the small chapel there. Next to it we descend some steps and hike down from the saddle through the chestnut forest to Falmenta, a village with "stair streets," frescoed houses, and the church of San Lorenzo from 1565. From the piazza, you can overlook Valle Cannobina, which was only connected late by a dead-end road. At the church, we follow the sign "Ponte di Spoccia" to the left, take the wide, gently descending path S01d to the districts (frazioni) La Valle and Solgia, then descend over a well-built stairway into the Cannobina Valley. There we walk left on the SP75 road, cross the Ponte di Spoccia after 5 minutes, leave the SP75 road after 50 meters, climb a stairway first, and then continue on a narrow, steep path S00 upwards for 20 minutes.
