Guggernülli and Kellaspitze
The western neighbor of the Kellaspitze—whose north face is rugged and forbidding—bears the whimsical name Guggernülli. Year after year, subsidence is recorded on its mountainside, which also threatens the village of Marul.
At the Walserklause in Marul, near the church with its historic mountain elm, we follow the sign for “Stafelfeder-Alpe.” A paved farm road winds its way through the upper part of the village, Unter den Buchen, offering a lovely view of the middle section of the Großes Walsertal. We continue across steep mountain meadows (turn right at house number 82) to the Ahorn parcel, 1,180 m. Now we opt for the direct ascent route and turn onto a trail that leads to the Stafelfederalpe, 1,472 m. Those who prefer a more leisurely pace can simply stick to the wide farm road. To the south, we see the Gamsfreiheit. The small sign marked “Kellaspitze” now guides us upward across pasture slopes to the saddle known as Bettlerstapfen. To the north, the villages of Sonntag and Fontanella line the road up to the Faschinajoch. It’s just a stone’s throw from there along trail marks over a short ridge to the Guggernülli (1,736 m), which rises to the west and is forested almost to its summit. Back at the saddle,
