With 40 million books sold, he is probably one of the most successful German bestselling authors. Born in Kaufbeuren in 1855, he spent part of his childhood in Welden from 1859-65 as the son of the district forester August Ganghofer, who was later even ennobled as the highest Bavarian forestry official due to his invention of the practical wood calculator. He collected formative childhood experiences in the woods and fields, which he processed in numerous novels in which his homeland always took center stage. Many were also made into films. Abused by the National Socialists for propaganda purposes, he later fell into oblivion.
We start in Welden at the Landgasthof zum Hirsch, 462 m, and follow the Theklasteig trail to the right at the market square, which soon leads steeply uphill as a footpath at the edge of a mixed forest to the monastery church of St. Thekla, 503 m, from where you can enjoy the view of Welden. The relief at the top is uneven, as this was once the site of the ancestral castle of the Lords of Welden, which was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. At the church, which Count Joseph Maria Fugger had built on the occasion of a vow after a bloodbath during a hunt in 1756, we keep to the right and walk past the convent buildings of the Discalced Carmelites, which were added in 1928/31 and where the Fugger's hunting lodge once stood. The church, which was already expensive to build, is one of the finest rococo creations in Bavarian Swabia and one of its most important sacred buildings.
