Summit Joy and Four Mountain Lakes

Thanks to the excellent public transportation connections, this wonderful tour can be easily done by public transit. The departure times are scheduled to allow plenty of time for sightseeing and resting. The Große and Kleine Gurpitscheck are among the most striking mountains in the Lungau region, if only because of their distinctive pyramidal shapes. You might want to quickly forget the view of the “castle hotels” at the Radstädter Tauern Pass—from the deep blue-green Twenger Almsee onward, there’s nothing but pure nature.

Behind the Schaidberg Youth Hostel, at 1,623 m (not open in summer), a trail begins that leads southeast at a moderate incline to the Ernstalm, 1,869 m, where it meets the trail from the Tauern Pass summit. After a few minutes, the marked trail branches off to the left in front of the staffed Twengeralm, 1,902 m, and leads through blooming alpine meadows—first almost level, then quite briskly along a small stream—into a small hollow where the Twenger Almsee, 2,120 m, is hidden. Go right around the lake and continue steeply upward to a saddle.Experienced mountaineers with sure footing and a head for heights will turn right here toward the Großer Gurpitscheck, 2,526 m; the others descend directly to the two Schönalm lakes. The route to the summit begins as an exposed ridge hike and ends with rocky terrain. The descent from the Gurpitscheck to the saddle above the Twenger Almsee follows the same path as the ascent. From the saddle, the trail leads once again through beautiful alpine
