As a day hike from Hochzirl, the Solstein is a challenging hike. Staying overnight at the Solsteinhaus is therefore a good option. Combining it with the “Halltal – Hallerangerhaus” hike or the “Scharnitzer Zunterkopf” hike—where you reach the hut via a high-altitude trail in each case—also makes for a lovely weekend itinerary.
From Hochzirl, a well-marked trail leads via the Solnalm to the Solsteinhaus. From the hut, we follow a well-marked mountain trail southeastward toward the mountain pine fields on the ridge running westward from the Solstein. Through mountain pine groves, over scree, and across grassy sections, we quickly gain elevation. We stay just south of the steep cliffs the entire way and thus reach the summit of the Großer Solstein. Crossing the connecting ridge to the Kleiner Solstein, we arrive at the saddle between the two peaks. Before the trail begins to climb again, we branch off to the southeast onto a grassy plateau, from which we—now heading southwest—turn into the steep trough of the Wörgltal valley. We now descend via numerous switchbacks to the Neue Magdeburger Hütte . Following a hiking trail that cuts across the switchbacks of the road, we now head down to the Brunntal Inn . We follow the road toward Zirl until we reach a fork that leads right into the Brunntal. After crossing
