The first complete travel guide for Switzerland, "Guide to the Most Useful and Enjoyable Way to Travel in Switzerland" by Johann Gottfried Ebel, which appeared as early as 1793, has long heavily promoted the mountain pass hike over the Grosse Scheidegg. Even though today there is a road – fortunately only open to bus traffic – over the pass, the hike promises astonishing variety and magnificent scenery. This already begins at the Reichenbach Falls with beautiful views of the Haslital, in the Rosenlaui Valley the Wellhorn and Rosenlaui Glacier are particularly impressive, and at Schwarzwaldalp the massive Wetterhorn. And finally, a wonderful descent awaits into the Grindelwald valley. To make the hike even more enjoyable, there are also numerous wonderful places to stop along the way.
From the mountain station at the Reichenbach Falls near the waterfall up to Zwirgi. On the hiking trail, which mostly runs beside the road, passing Kaltenbrunnen-Säge to Gschwantenmad and then beautifully along the Rychenbach to Rosenlaui.Up to the entrance of the Glacier Gorge and south of the pass road on the hiking trail to Schwarzwaldalp. Then uphill along the valley over Teiffenmatten to Alpiglen, 1678 m. The hiking trail leads, crossing the road several times, directly to the Grosse Scheidegg. Westwards down to Stepfihubel and along the Bärgelbach gorge. At the Wandela junction, 1549 m, turn left and descend via Schwendibiel, 1440 m, and Sibet Schierli, 1341 m, down to Hotel Wetterhorn.
