In the wedge between the Isar and Leutascher Ache, the three-peaked Arnspitzstock rises completely alone, catching the eye from all sides. Compact Wetterstein limestone gives the three peaks wild and very distinctive shapes. The highest point, the Große Arnspitze, is especially visited. Scharnitz is the usual starting point, but the ascent from Unterleutasch over the Riedbergscharte is more attractive, exciting, and alpine. There, you are on the north ridge for a longer time with its magnificent views. The tour requires mountaineering experience and stamina; those who prefer a more leisurely pace can be content with Riedkopf or the Northern Achterkopf. The almost white, bare surfaces on the Arnspitzen, reminiscent of the Southern Alps, are the result of a massive forest and dwarf pine fire.
From the Gasthof zur Mühle in Burggraben we walk 100 m along a wide path at the foot of the mountain and turn left onto a trail that first passes over flat, then increasingly steep forest slopes up to the Schartental. In this shallow notch, we ascend in many small switchbacks to the Riedbergscharte, 1454 m, with a surprising view of the Karwendel mountains. The further ascent along the ridge is also very steep until we reach a first apparent summit – in reality just a small ridge shoulder – the Riedkopf, 1860 m. On and beside the ridge with its wide views, we then reach the Northern Achterkopf, 1972 m, a worthwhile intermediate goal. From there we continue following the trail, which now leaves the ridge due to the rocks and crosses the steep eastern slopes with some altitude loss. This brings us to the Bavarian Karl and the "normal route" coming up from Scharnitz. Through dwarf pine, we reach the Arnspitzhütte, 1955 m, an open shelter hut, and on the right into a saddle at the foot of
